When I first started SQND CITY, the plan was simple: launch a clean, retro quartz watch line that felt familiar and accessible. But as I dove deeper into watchmaking, spending countless nights adjusting tolerances, sourcing parts, and learning the realities of manufacturing, I realized I was capable of much more. The original idea felt too small. I wasn’t just assembling watches anymore—I was designing and engineering them from the ground up.


This shift changed everything. SQND CITY is no longer just about retro quartz pieces. It’s about creating mechanical watches that demand precision, intention, and craftsmanship. Watches that feel alive.

The Spark That Ignited a New Direction


Starting with quartz watches made sense. They are reliable, affordable, and easier to produce for a new brand. The retro style also connected with a broad audience who appreciate classic designs. But as I built prototypes and worked with manufacturers, I learned how much more was possible.


The process revealed the complexity and beauty of mechanical watchmaking. I found myself fascinated by the engineering challenges and the artistry involved. This fascination grew into a passion that pushed me to rethink SQND CITY’s future.


Why Mechanical Watches Matter


Mechanical watches are more than just timekeepers. They are pieces of art and engineering that require skill and precision. Each component must fit perfectly, and every movement must be finely tuned. This level of craftsmanship creates a connection between the watch and its wearer that quartz watches rarely achieve.


For SQND CITY, moving into mechanical watches means:

The New Timeline and What’s Coming


The original plan was to launch the retro quartz line in 2026. That timeline is now scrapped. Instead, this fall, SQND CITY will release a limited test run of mechanical watches inspired by the Chicago Bears. This homage pays tribute to my hometown and the grit that shaped me.


This release marks the beginning of a new era for SQND CITY. While the Bears homage uses known cases and bezels, it carries the brand’s identity in every detail. It serves as a bridge toward fully ground-up mechanical builds.


Behind the scenes, I’m already working with overseas manufacturers on:


  • Concepts and design language

  • Cost analysis and timelines

  • Full mechanical development


This groundwork will lead to future releases that are entirely designed and built by SQND CITY.


Small Batch Homages as a Bridge


While the full mechanical builds are in development, SQND CITY will continue releasing small batch themed homages. These watches use existing cases and bezels but are customized with unique design elements that reflect the brand’s evolving identity.


These drops keep the brand active and engaged with the community while building anticipation for the mechanical line. They also allow me to experiment with design ideas and gather feedback from watch enthusiasts.


What This Means for Watch Lovers


For collectors and fans of SQND CITY, this pivot means more exciting and ambitious watches ahead. The move to mechanical watches offers:


  • More complexity and character in each piece

  • Greater connection to traditional watchmaking

  • Unique designs that reflect both heritage and innovation


It also means the retro quartz line isn’t gone—it will have its moment later. But right now, SQND CITY is focused on pushing boundaries and creating watches that stand out in the mechanical space.

This evolution taught me several important lessons:
